As temperatures in most of Venezuela rarely fall below 70 or above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, most houses are "open air" abodes. Windows slide on tracks leaving openings of a centimeter or more between panes--or don't close at all. Therefore, the presence of some small creatures in homes is common.
Just another small detail of life in Venezuela. While it may seem uncomfortable or unusual, I view it as a fortunate closeness to nature, an increased opportunity for encountering the beauty of our world.

Sydney is the same way. My MBA friends from the States were shocked and awed that most windows don't have screen and stay open due to the temperate climate. And good luck finding a house with heat in the winter and A/C in the summer! Most don't need it.
